Un po' di storia
La
costruzione, antecedente il X secolo, ospitò intorno alla fine del X
secolo una delle residenze vescovili della vallata. La decadenza di
Luni, che già dal IV secolo aveva portato i suoi abitanti a
spostarsi verso i colli circostanti fondando nuovi borghi (Nicola,
Ortonovo, Castelnuovo Magra, Ameglia), fece sì che anche la collina
di Sarzanello si popolasse di esuli, che si raccoglievano intorno
alla residenza più importante del vescovo, in cerca di protezione.
Dal
1314 al 1328, Castruccio Castracani, divenuto plenipotenziario della
zona, scelse la fortezza come sua dimora.
Nel
1421 il genovese Tomaso Fregoso fece eseguire dei lavori di
riadattamento della rocca. Altri restauri si susseguirono fino alla
venuta della signoria fiorentina. I Medici decisero di adattare la
rocca alle nuove esigenze belliche, ma quando nel 1494 Piero dei
Medici consegnò Sarzana a Carlo VIII, i lavori alla fortezza erano
ancora incompleti. L'opera fu ripresa quando il re tornò in Francia
e la fortezza, così come la cittadella, entrarono in possesso del
genovese Banco di San Giorgio. I lavori vennero terminati nel 1502.
Agli
inizi del XVIII secolo i francesi apportarono nuovamente delle
modifiche. Durante la dominazione francese, però, la fortezza corse
inspiegabilmente il rischio di essere demolita; fu risparmiata solo
per ragioni di tempo, in quanto l'operazione doveva compiersi entro e
non oltre tre mesi.
Nel
1814, con il passaggio al Regno di Sardegna, ne fu dichiarato il
restauro ed il ripristino. Nel 1837 venne visitata dallo stesso re
Carlo Alberto.
Brief History
The
building dates back to the tenth century and originally housed one of
the bishop's residences of the valley. The decline of Luni – wich
since the fourth century had brought his people to move to the
surrounding hills and founded new villages (Nicola, Ortonovo,
Castelnuovo Magra, Ameglia) – meant that also the hill of
Sarzanello was populates by refugees, looking for protection near the
most important residence of the bishop.
Between
1314 and 1328, Castruccio Castracani chose the castle as his
residence. In 1412 the Genoese Tomaso Fregoso made some works of
restoration to the fortress. The family Medici decided to adapt it to
the new demands of war, but in 1494, when Sarzana was conquered by
the french king Carlo VIII, the works were not yet completed.
The
renovation works began again when the king returned to France and the
fortress came into possession of Banco di San Giorgio. The works were
completed in 1502.
At
the beginning of the eighteenth century, the French introduced new
changes. During their domination the fortress ran the risk of being
torn down: this didn't happen due to time constraints: the demolition
in fact had to take place within three months. In 1814, with the
transition to the Kingdom of Sardinia, was finally decided the
restoration of the fortress. In 1837 the fort was visited by the king
Carlo Alberto himself.
Visite ed Eventi
La
fortezza è visitabile tutti i giorni al prezzo di 3,50 euro
(biglietto intero), 3,00 euro (biglietto ridotto). Inoltre ogni mese
vengono organizzate le ormai tradizionali cene a tema: Cene
storiche...con delitto! E cene romantiche. Inoltre la locanda della
fortezza è aperta tutti i fine settimana, per cenare in un ambiente
decisamente suggestivo.

The fort is open daily. The price of the ticket is 3,50 euro (full ticket) or 3,00 euro (reduced ticket).
And how can we forget the montly themed dinner? First of all, the “Historical Murder Mistery Dinner”, and then the “Romantic Dinner”. The restaurant “Locanda della Fortezza” is open every weekend and it is a spectacular place to dine in!
